PROTOTYPE 1
Journalist Source Book
This was the first visual prototype in a semester-long project which focused on creating tools that would facilitate the critical listening skills needed to be a student reporter for a school newspaper. The system featured customized tooltips which can be used to collect and assign background information to particular sources from online research. When particular information is well-suited to a source, the tooltip can be used to formulate a specific, directed question. Questions and background information can be compared across sources.
PROTOTYPE 2
Interview Recording Visualizer
This was the second visual prototype in a semester-long project which focused on creating tools that would facilitate the critical listening skills needed to be a student reporter for a school newspaper. The tablet system can record multiple audio interviews for a given topic. Circular nodes along a path represent separate questions that a particular source was asked. Nodes grow in scale when similar questions are asked to multiple sources. Using speech-to-text capabilities, the resulting transcripts can be analyzed and compared based on various metrics. The reporter can then select specific quotes from the source transcripts that will be used later in writing the news article.
PROTOTYPE 3
News Article Planner
This was the third and final visual prototype in a semester-long project which focused on creating tools that would facilitate the critical listening skills needed to be a student reporter for a school newspaper. This is a prototype for a cloud-based word-processing application.
A student newspaper reporter can use this to access, review and organize quotes taken from interview transcripts, and insert them into an outline format in preparation for writing his or her news article. The composition of direct and indirect quotes, by source, is indicated by color bars on the right-hand side of the window.
