Activity Interaction Theory

Graduate School  •  October 2013
This is an interactive story that deals with progressive “enhancements” to a vehicular key fob, and the subsequent effects on a person’s activities, goals, perceptions, emotions and motivations. This graduate studio project was modeled on Activity Theory, and traces the fictional narrative of “Jack” as he continually upgrades his key fob on five separate days. This project was coded using HTML, CSS3 and Javascript.

The reader is invited to click on any one of the five fobs at the top of the screen, which navigates him to the corresponding day in the story. The reader may also dial up or down each of the six metrics: Activities, Goals, Experiences, Emotions, Perceptions and Motivations. Each of these metrics is tagged to specific text in the story at the right, and allows the reader to more easily compare metrics across separate days in the story.

Below is the Activity Theory concept map for this project, which traces multiple iterations of changes to the object (the key fob) and the subsequent impact on a user’s Activities, Goals, Experiences, Emotions, Perceptions and Motivations.
